Oriah Mountain Dreamer wrote in The Invitation: "Our anticipated loss of what we take for granted reminds us of what is precious, of what matters and what does not. I don't want to wait for death to be near to receive the beauty in my life. I want to be awed every day by the truth- pretty and painful- and let it open me to the beauty that surrounds me and draws me deeper and deeper into my own life."

SCHINNELL LEAKE, Founder & Executive Director

BIO

It was the “extra special feeling” Schinnell Leake felt a birthday party brought to the ordinary moments in life of a child that lead her to establish Extra-Ordinary Birthdays in 2010.  After learning that more than 2,000 children live in homeless shelters throughout the Washington, D.C. area, Schinnell decided not to, in the words of Sam Rayburn, “… wait for extraordinary circumstances to do good action, but try to use ordinary situations.”  Eating cake, singing Happy Birthday, playing games, opening presents are all ordinary things in a birthday party that can be taken for granted. However, when you are homeless, life is anything but ordinary and the means to pay for or even think about planning a birthday party is often out of a parent’s reach when overwhelmed with just securing a warm, safe, and permanent place for your family to sleep each night.

The mission of Extra-Ordinary Birthdays (EOB) is to transform the lives of homeless children by creating personalized birthday parties that make them feel valued and inspire moments of delight in their lives. EOB believes every child deserves to celebrate their birthday, to know that their family and others care about them and their growth matters, which contributes to their self-esteem and worth.  EOB brings the simple joy of birthday parties to homeless children from babies to teens in shelters in Washington, DC, Maryland and Virginia each month shining a light on homeless children and honoring them for who they are despite their circumstances.

The only organization of its kind in the capital area that throws personalized birthday parties for homeless children to make them feel recognized and valued, EOB this year launched two new programs to continue their work of layering self-worth.

Extra-Ordinary Moms (EOM) is a recognition program for homeless mothers with the purpose of inspiring and motivating their self-worth through positive reinforcement, personal development and membership in a supportive community.  The EOM Program encourages determined mothers to feel proud of the progress they make each day to be the best mom they can be with the resources they have. When mom is recognized and cared for we believe she is better suited to celebrate life and foster a healthy level of self-esteem in their children.

Our Extraordinary Readers (EOR) program supports literacy for all children, regardless of socioeconomic status. It permits each child who receives an Extraordinary Birthdays celebration to be treated to a very special party favor—a brand new, age appropriate children’s book, chosen especially for them. Through EOR we encourage self-worth and forward thinking toward a bright future for homeless children as well as pride in ownership of a new book.

As a mother, Schinnell knows how important it is for children to feel confident and have self-worth.  Through Extra-Ordinary Birthdays, Schinnell has thrown more than 450 birthday parties and currently partners with eight homeless shelters in the metropolitan area.  Celebrations that show the children that they are worth celebrating and truly one of a kind.

True Success is Believing Big

Co-Founder of Believe Big and cancer survivor, Ivelisse Page, shares with us what questions she asked and beliefs she already had around the quality of life she wanted to live when faced with a dire cancer diagnosis. In her thirties with an estimated 6 months to live, she sought out treatments that fit her preferences and worked with both an oncologist at Johns Hopkins University as well as complimentary medicine practices. Her open minded approach led to currently an 8 year cancer free life, with a new clinical trial going on, the first in the United States, to test the impact mistletoe therapy has on cancer treatment. Her organization brings together faith, hope, options, education and grants so that patients can have choices of treatments that include both conventional and complimentary medicine.

Shamika Gary of Mika Je Clothing

A little over two years ago, I started out just wanting to make clothes for my daughter and I. I was tired of not finding certain things that I wanted her to have in the malls or paying for expensive clothing for a child. I also wanted to do matching Mommy and Me outfits for certain special occasions like Mother’s Day, etc… I was already somewhat into fashion and I love styling my daughter and I would get so many compliments on what we would wear. I’ve even done fashion styling for a few photoshoots. I love being able to make clothes because it allows me to be creative and help people feel and look good in their clothing at the same time. Any job that allows me to be creative excites me! I decided to go into business once I started getting a lot of positive feedback from social media, my family and friends.

My hopes for others is that I can aspire at least one person to go after their dreams, no matter their age and/or circumstances. Especially, people with a similar background as me. For example, growing up in a not so great community, battling depression, being a single mother, being a black woman and just having all odds against you. I want to be that motivating factor for someone who does not have the confidence to pursue their passion or go after their goals.

True Success is Having Faith with Kellee Southern

Recorded during a LIVE Interview at The PINK EVENT Kellee Southern and our CEO Meghan Enriquez sat down to have a conversation about survivorship and the role that faith and prayer played after her diagnosis of breast cancer at age 45.

Kellee Southern’s journey as a breast cancer advocate began on her 45th birthday, December 27, 2012, the day she received her diagnosis. She credits that day as the one that taught her the true value of having God in her life, being surrounded by loving family and friends and embracing life – every moment, every day.

Following her diagnosis, Kellee started her own social media breast cancer awareness campaign called “Touch the Tatas,” through which she reminds women (and men) to do a self-examination on the 27thday of every month. As part of the campaign, she also encourages her pink sisters, their families and others to be their own advocate for treatment and wellness.

As a result of her campaign, Kellee has become a much sought-after speaker — sharing her story of survivorship and raising awareness. In 2013, Kellee and her team of supporters formed Team Butterfly to help raise funds for breast cancer research as part of the Susan G. Komen Race for the Cure. Her passion for spreading awareness led to an invitation to speak on the national stage in 2014 and to participate on the Susan G. Komen Advisory Council.

Her involvement with For 3 Sisters began in 2013. A resident of Silver Spring, Maryland, she eagerly welcomes this opportunity to serve the organization and continue her passion for advocacy by assisting local families affected by breast cancer.

Kellee’s greatest joy is being the wife to her devoted husband (Alvin), a mother to three wonderful children (Glenn, Joshua and Angelique) and daughter to a loving and supportive mother (Bonnie). By the grace of God, she has also been given the treasured title of breast cancer survivor.

True Success is Self Love and Not Judgment

If any of the following quotes speak to you... then you may be in need of hearing this conversation with Julie Reisler and our founder Meghan Enriquez.

Your value is not determined by how much you produce or your popularity.
The more we share with each other "the other side" of the gift... then when you are going through your darkest times, you will remember that this is your teacher, this is changing you and helping you become more of who you are.
How are you digesting your fear and worry? Pause and be aware. Self love effects your health.
What is the next most loving thing I can do for myself right now?

True Success™ is Connection; with CEO Meghan Enriquez

From a success and career stand point I had all of the advantages of being white. From a social stand point the fact that I looked Asian on the outside invites all kinds of misunderstandings, it invites stereotypes, it invites bullying. So from a very young age I wanted people to respect me for who I was as a human being and in turn that is what I extend to others.
— Founder and CEO of True Conversations, Meghan Enriquez

This True Conversations, TRUE Success™ special edition podcast, speaks with our Founder and CEO, Meghan Enriquez about how connection to self identity, other points of view, to a higher power and each other, is what makes us a True Success.
